PORTOBELO HERITAGE JOURNEY

DISCOVER THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF PORTOBELO, PANAMA

Just beyond Isla Grande lies Portobelo, a Caribbean town shaped by centuries of trade, faith, art and history. This guided journey takes you through some of its most important landmarks, from the remains of its colonial fortifications to the historic Customs House and the streets that once connected this coast to a much larger world.

The experience also enters the spiritual and cultural life of Portobelo with a visit to San Felipe Apóstol Parish, home of the revered Black Christ, before continuing to Casa Congo, where Afro-descendant art and heritage bring another layer of the destination into view.

A CARIBBEAN TOWN WITH CENTURIES TO TELL

Portobelo rewards those who look beyond the shoreline. Its forts speak to the town’s strategic importance during the colonial era, while the Customs House recalls the movement of goods, ships and people that once made this small Caribbean port part of an international trade network.

At the Church of San Felipe, the story becomes more personal. The Black Christ of Portobelo remains an important figure of devotion, connecting the town’s history with traditions that are still very much alive today.

The journey ends at Casa Congo, where art and Afro-descendant culture offer a contemporary expression of Portobelo’s identity. Together, these places reveal a destination where history is not confined to monuments — it continues through faith, creativity and community.
